Picnic sites aim for glory- 17 April 2009
Carmarthenshire’s spectacular picnic sites are competing to be named the best in Wales.
Two of the county’s most beautiful spots are being entered into the National Picnic Awards.
Tourism bosses believe that the sites at Laugharne and Penymynydd merit national praise for their stunning locations and panoramic views.
Dylan’s Walk at Laugharne has been singled out for its commanding position which helped inspire some of Dylan Thomas’ most famous works.
Penymynydd has been included for its superb views across the Gwendraeth Valley and Carmarthen Bay.
Carmarthenshire County Council, which manages the sites, is behind the nominations.
The ten best picnic sites in Wales will be shortlisted for the awards and the winner will be decided by a public vote.
The council’s Tourism and Marketing Manager Huw Parsons said: “There are 14 picnic sites in Carmarthenshire, which all provide visitors and locals with a place to rest and enjoy some of our spectacular countryside and wildlife.
“It was a very difficult task deciding which should be nominated as all are worthy contenders.”
Dylan’s Walk is one of Carmarthenshire’s most popular picnic spots.
Visitors to the site can relax and enjoy the charismatic seascape that is immortalised in Dylan Thomas’ work.
It was while he lived at the nearby Boathouse that he penned such masterpieces as the lyrical Under Milk Wood.
The timeless landscape stretches across to St John’s Hill and the Taf estuary as far as Ginst Point and Carmarthen Bay.
Penymynydd, which is located between Pembrey and Trimsaran, is in a superb mountain top location and its elevated position commands beautiful views.
It is the perfect starting spot for walking the many footpaths on Pembrey Mountain and is close to the hugely popular and attraction packed Pembrey Country Park, Cefn Sidan beach and the scenic harbour town of Burry Port.
The award nominations are part of an ongoing drive to promote Carmarthenshire and strengthen the county’s growing reputation as a visitor hotspot.
The council’s Regeneration Executive Board Member cllr Clive Scourfield said: “Carmarthenshire is a county famed for its stunning countryside and these picnic sites are popular with both residents and visitors alike.
“I would hope they earn the recognition they deserve.”
